Women in Business: Five mistakes you might not know you are making when dressing for the office.
Are you dressing right for the job you have? It might be a surprise to you but many women are just slightly off base when dressing for work. Here are some great tips to help you look and feel professional in the workplace.
Mistake 1: Your underwear/bra strap is showing.
Eek! Even something as seemingly innocent as a bra strap peeking out from an open blouse can read as inappropriate in an office environment. This really holds true if it has little spaghetti straps or even some pretty lace detailing that make it look especially like lingerie. It’s just not professional.
Fix: Cover it up!
Look at yourself in the mirror. Turn around. Stretch. Reach. Bend over. If at any point a bra strap pops out or you notice your shapewear peeking below the hemline of your skirt, it's probably a good idea to change. This is even true if the undergarment in question isn't sexy. The issue comes with the fact that it's visible makes you look sloppy and that's not the impression you want to give to a potential employer. Plus it’s no one’s business what you wear under your clothing.
Mistake 2: Your shirt/skirt/dress/blouse is see-through.
Depending on the office you work in, wearing a sheer blouse over a neutral bra or camisole can end up looking inappropriate. To be honest, unless you work in fashion, this is a no-no.
The fact is, even a little bit of transparency can be a distraction and you never want your clothes to be a distraction. It can also make you look unprofessional and as if you don’t know how to dress for work.
Fix: Stick to sturdy fabrics and knits, and stay away from anything flimsy.
And make sure any under layers you wear are smooth so they don't cause strange bumps in your clothing. This also goes for things like thong under pants. If you can see it through the material of your skirt or pants, you have chosen the wrong undergarment for the workplace.
Mistake 3: Your hair is wet when you arrive to the office or you look like you just got out of a wind storm.
People put a lot of a first impression based on looks. Every time you enter the office you are going through the process of a first impression. Honestly, do you really expect your boss to trust you to complete important tasks when you can't even manage to get up in the morning in time to wash and blow-dry your own hair?
Fix: Either wash it the night before, or put in some dry shampoo and give yourself an up-do that is quick, easy and chic.
Here’s the truth: your boss does not care if your alarm didn't go off or if you were up all night comforting your roommate or taking care of a sick boyfriend. It's up to you to manage your own time outside of the office. How you manage yourself is a clear indicator of who you are.
Mistake 5: You can't bend over without flashing the people standing behind you.
If you feel the need to hold your skirt against your backside before bending over to pick up something from the floor, then it is really too short and possibly also too tight.
Fix: Wear a longer skirt or just wear pants.
That is all.
Mistake 5: You over excessorize your look and it’s distracting
Are you wearing tons of chunky bracelets, a huge cocktail ring, and a large pendant? It might be too much.
Fix: Learn the art of using a signature piece or a statement piece when dressing for the office.
If you have too many accessories on your look gives off the vibe that you are cluttered and not organize. This can also make you look unprofessional. When dressing for the office, less is more.
Choose one piece that you can wear with many outfits and keep it simple. You don’t need a bauble and bangle on every limb. For instance the TURMERIC NECKLACE WITH GREEN STONE is the perfect statement piece when paired with a dress shirt and slacks. If you are looking for something simple to add to a basic dress WHEEL OF FORTUNE RING is the perfect accent to spice up your look.
